Cantilever stairs are essentially straight open riser flights with no side stringer creating a floating effect from a side wall. They require hidden construction within the wall to meet projected loadings but with creative design this can be minimal. The result is the effect of a floating stair. Whilst they are predominantly single flight straight staircases they can be designed for many stair footprints. Glass balustrades are the favoured choice to enhance the lightness and open feel of a cantilever stair, although many balustrade designs can be incorporated. Timber treads are again the predominate choice but can be stone, tiled or virtually any suitable material, even glass.
