A helical staircase generally require more floor space than other types of staircase. They provide a sweeping curve around an open area for maximum aesthetic effect. The footprint of a helical staircase can be circular, elliptical, constant or tapering. A helical staircase will require a balustrade or barrier to both sides of the flight. They provide a very grand effect to a property, particularly in an entrance hall and have even been mirrored to each side for the extra wow-factor. Due to the stairs structural requirements the build specifications of helical staircase are more complex than other types, but creative design and experience result in stunning installations. Scala's designs incorporate a steel carriage core to our helical staircase that provide the necessary strength without unnecessary bulk. This enables finishing materials such as stone, timber, polished steels, glass and polished plaster to be used in finishing stairs to a unique and classical shape. A helical staircase differs from a spiral staircase essentially in that they do not have a central column, are more sweeping in design and comfortable to use.

A spiral staircase revolves as a constant curve and distance around a central support column. Spiral stairs have a unique quality and can feature in the centre of a room or in a corner to optimise floor space. Open or closed risers between treads work equally well on spiral designs, and together with simple or intricate bespoke balustrade designs are a striking feature. Spiral stairs allow a wide range of balustrade styles and when over a given diameter can feature glass balustrades with or without baluster posts. Treads can be designed to accommodate virtually every material synergy from timber, stone, glass and tile in keeping with the overall property concept.

A cantilever staircase essentially does not have a stringer to the balustrade side of the flights with treads projecting from a wall giving a cantilever effect. They require hidden construction within the wall to meet projected loadings but with creative design this can be minimal. The result is the effect of a floating stair. Whilst they are predominantly single flight straight staircases they can be designed for many stair footprints. Glass balustrades are the favoured choice to enhance the lightness and open feel of a cantilever stair, although many balustrade designs can be incorporated. Timber treads are again the predominate choice but can be stone, tiled or virtually any suitable material, even glass.

Profile stairs, sometimes referred to as zig-zag stairs are very popular as an alternative to a conventional straight stringer. Generally of open riser design they provide a slightly quirky, modern designer feel to a stair installation. Clients looking for contemporary stairs often consider this design. As with all our stairs and balustrade we can build with any suitable materials such as stone, timber, polished steels and glass.
